| A Loing Battle: Scaling down
It's somewhat funny to think back 14 months when I finally decided to risk my life and undergo bariatric weight loss surgery. At 509 pounds, I was afraid I'd die on the operating table. If I had not made the decision, however, I may not have lived to see my youngest son Brad play his first season of flag football this fall because I was on the fast road to an early death. I made the decision that was in the best interest of me and my family, and on Sept. 20, 2006, my life changed forever when I had the surgery. I was the largest patient that Presbyterian Hospital of Denton ever got approved for the Lap-Band procedure. My main goal was to lose 100 pounds. I figured I could live another 10 years and see both of my boys through high school if I could get down to 400 pounds.
Sen. Judd Gregg: Mandated coverage is keeping many in NH uninsured
Like most states, New Hampshire struggles with the issue of affordable health insurance coverage for its citizens. Roughly 150,000 people across the state lack health insurance. Of this number, a large group, approximately 75,000, are working-age individuals or their families who choose not to buy coverage or who work for employers who cannot afford to pay for their coverage. In most cases, this is caused by the high cost of premiums for health insurance. This is a serious problem for each and every uninsured family struggling to access basic health care services. And it is being made worse by new and excessive health insurance mandates proposed by the Democratic-run Legislature, which are driving the cost of insurance higher and pushing more people into the ranks of the uninsured.
Michael Cullen Speech On Social Justice
Prime Minister Helen Clark, my ministerial and parliamentary colleagues, fellow-members of the Labour Party, tena kotou katoa. This has been a Conference where we celebrate, we deliberate, and we dedicate and rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of social justice. That we can celebrate should be obvious to all. The New Zealand we now have the honour to lead is a far better place than the one we inherited. People now take for granted what merely seemed a distant hope in 1999. .

FDA Nod for Liver Cancer Pill
The American FDA has approved of the use of Nexavar (sorafenib), manufactured by Bayer HealthCare AG and Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc, as a liver cancer drug. This puts it way ahead of any competitors. Nexavar had already been approved of in 2005dfor the treatment o f kidney cancer in over 60 countries, including the USA. Now it will be the first to be also used for liver cancer or HCC that cannot be surgically removed. Liver cancer or HCC can be difficult to remove completely with surgery. Then, when all of the cancer is not removed, the disease proves fatal in about three to six months. Every year, about 600,000 people die from the sixth most common form of cancer in the world, liver cancer. Over 50%of these fatalities occur in China where additional trials are being carried out of the drug.
