Somerset Hospital offers weight-loss surgery
Teresa Matsko, Boswell, tried almost every known diet without much success."I was tired of yo-yo diets," she said. "I had GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), tendon problems, degenerative discs and sleep apnea. I've been trying to get weight-loss surgery for two years, but insurance denied it at first." The 53-year-old housewife weighed 232 pounds in July when she underwent gastric bypass surgery at Somerset Hospital. She now weighs 182 and her goal is 150."I no longer need an oxygen tank at night and I don't have heartburn anymore," she said. "I look so different, when I went in for my three-month checkup, Dr. Pradhan didn't recognize me."Dr. Kumuda Pradhan performed the surgery. She was his first gastric bypass patient at Somerset Hospital, but he performed more than 120 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., where he completed his fellowship in bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery.
Current Steelers put on a show for legends
PITTSBURGH Hall of Famers galore lined the Steelers' sideline, with Terry Bradshaw and Mean Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Mel Blount and Franco Harris out front. No wonder the Baltimore Ravens probably thought they were playing all of them and the current Steelers, too. Ben Roethlisberger tied the Steelers' single-game record with five touchdown passes in the first half as Bradshaw stood nearby cheering him on, and Pittsburgh put on a Steel Curtain-like defensive show for its returning stars by forcing four turnovers before halftime in a 38-7 victory Monday night. The Ravens (4-4) had a chance to tie for the AFC North lead by beating the Steelers (6-2) for a fourth straight time dating to 2005. The Steelers forced three fumbles in the first quarter alone, with James Harrison hitting All-Pro safety Ed Reed so hard on a punt return the ball flew nearly 15 feet before Pittsburgh recovered.
Original `Dreamgirl' Jennifer Holliday is happy at last
For Jennifer Holliday, the original Effie White in Broadway's "Dreamgirls," life has had its share of nightmare moments. Only 19 when the tumultuous "Dreamgirls" development process began, and 21 when the show opened in 1981, Holliday became an instant Broadway legend as soon as audiences heard her sing the show's standout anthem, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." Holliday stayed with the show for three years, and though she won the Tony Award for best actress in a musical, she was unhappy and isolated - a long way away from her Houston, Texas, roots. And her weight was an issue. Holliday has estimated that at her heaviest, she was 330 pounds or more. After a string of failures - her recording career never took off, a Broadway-bound show about Mahalia Jackson self-destructed, her nine-month marriage ended in divorce - Holliday attempted suicide on her 30th birthday.
